THE KETOGENIC DIET: IS GOING LOW CARB HEALTHY?

This is the big question everybody asks their nutritionist when it comes down to the Ketogenic Diet - is it healthy?

There is a lot of fantastic evidence to support that going low-carb is healthy, but only when executed in a wholesome way.

A few benefits of going low-carb include[1]:

  • Weight loss
  • Improved sugar metabolism and reduced insulin sensitivity in diabetics
  • Better oxygenation, especially in those with respiratory conditions
  • Protection against epilepsy

Essentially, going Keto means reducing your carb intake dramatically to stimulate the release of ketones, which supply your body with an alternative energy source other than glucose. Fats and proteins make up the rest of your energy intake.

This is great for those who want to lose weight, prevent epileptic seizures or who suffer from Diabetes, however it's not as straight forward as it seems.

One of the biggest problems with going low-carb[2] is that people tend to turn to poor quality, processed animal products for their fats and protein, such as cheeses, hydrogenated fats and cold meats.

Eating lots of processed foods such as these will not yield the positive results associated with a traditional low-carb Ketogenic diet. This problem, coupled with eating little-to-no fruits and healthy vegetables can have serious health consequences.

The best way to reap the benefits from a Ketogenic Diet is to consult with a dietician, nutritionist or alternative health practitioner that specializes in anti-aging and regenerative medicine.

These dietary health care professionals are able to inform you on the best foods to consume and avoid, allowing you to use the Ketogenic Diet for optimal health and well-being.
