Ankle Surgery- Orthopedics

Ankle surgery refers to any surgical procedure that repairs, realigns or replaces a part of, or the whole ankle.

Ankle surgeries are recommended when suffering from pain, ankle damage or misalignment of the feet, that less invasive protocols are not able to treat as effectively. Arthritis, sports- related injury and foot deformities are the most common conditions for which ankle surgery is implemented.

There are at least 23 different types of ankle surgery. The most common varieties repair torn ligaments or fractured ankle bones, as well as correcting their alignment. Other ankle- related surgical procedures involve reshaping or reconstructing bones, removing spurs and eliminating diseased tissue.

One of the most frequently used surgeries is known as ankle fusion surgery or arthrodesis. This procedure involves the use of metal plates and screws to fuse the bones of the ankle together, which effectively reduces pain in the ankle but drastically reduces mobility.

In some cases, an ankle replacement is required where a part or all of the ankle is reconstructed with plastic and metal prosthetics.

A patient undergoing ankle surgery may need to use strong painkillers, physiotherapy, orthotic insoles, and special shoes after the event. The recovery process can take 6 weeks or more, depending on what type of surgery was used. Recovery from ligament or tendon surgery generally takes longer.

Other ankle surgeries include:

  • Achilles Tendinosis Surgery
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture Surgery
