Why have eyelid surgery?

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is a relatively quick and simple surgical procedure. It is usually carried out for cosmetic reasons, however may be medically prescribed if a drooping eyelid or similar condition is blocking or impairing vision.

If you want to appear more youthful and fresh by removing sagging skin and bags under your eyes, this rejuvenating procedure may be perfect for you.

Is this procedure right for me?

While eyelid surgery is usually carried out for cosmetic reasons and results in a m ore youthful look, it does not remove dark circles under the eyes, crow’s feet or sagging eyebrows. These can be achieved with other procedures if necessary.

Eyelid surgery can be divided into three procedures.

Upper eyelid:  Could be carried out as a necessary medical procedure, when eyelids are drooping and obstructing vision.

Lower eyelid: to reduce the appearance of ‘bags’ under eyes and generally give a refreshed look

Double eyelid: generally carried out for cosmetic reasons. The surgeon creates a crease in

the upper lid to give the appearance of a double eyelid. This surgery is particularly popular in the Asian communities, however the majority generally opt to have this eyelid surgery in India as it is more affordable.

If you opt for more than one of these, your surgeon is likely to book you in for two surgeries rather than complete both procedures at the same time.

Will I require anaesthesia?

The surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic and sedation, or a general anaesthetic. You can discuss this with your surgeon.

How do I find the right surgeon?

When it comes to eyelid surgery, Thailand and India are home to the most sought after hospitals and surgeons carrying out this simple procedure.

Eyelid surgery in these countries is more cost-effective – you’ll have access to great facilities and healthcare professionals while staying well within your budget.

What happens during the procedure?

Depending on the type of eyelid surgery you’ve chosen, the surgeon’s methods will differ. To give you an idea of the procedure, we’ve created a summary:

  • The surgeon will make an incision in either the skin fold on the upper eyelid, just below the lashes, or inside the lower eyelid.
  • Excess fat, skin, muscle and tissue is removed, or repositioned to achieve your desired outcome.
  • Underlying tissue is tightened, if required, with the use of stitches.
  • Your surgeon finishes the procedure by ensuring all incisions are positioned within natural skin folds and creases to avoid visible scarring.
  • Incisions are then closed with either stitches, surgical tape or tissue glue. This will be discussed with you prior to the surgery taking place.

Will there be visible scarring?

Scarring is an important factor to take into consideration when making your decision whether or not to have eyelid surgery.

Your surgeon will attempt to hide any scarring within the natural lines and creases around your eyes so that any scars will be hidden.

It’s extremely important to heed the post-surgical advice given to you by your surgeon. Do your part to ensure reduced scarring by following your personal treatment plan, and continuing to apply prescribed ointments and other medications until the healing is complete.
