Lipoma/Mole/Cyst Removal- Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

Lipomas, moles, or cysts are usually harmless. Thus, you may not need any specific treatment to remove them. However, in some situations, these lumps can cause problems with your appearance, well-being, or even increase the risk of cancer.

Your doctor may perform surgery to remove these skin growths if they cause problems.

A Quick Overview of Lipoma, Mole, and Cyst

Lipomas are soft, painless fatty lumps that usually appear on the shoulders, chest, trunk, neck, thighs, and armpits. They are not cancerous and usually cause no harm to the person.

Moles are tiny skin growths that are either flat or raised. Most moles are not a major health problem. However, changes in a mole may be an early sign of cancer.

Cysts are fluid-filled pockets that appear on the face, neck, and trunk. Sebaceous cysts and epidermoid cysts are the common types. They are usually harmless but can cause problems with your appearance.

Diagnosis of Lipoma, Mole, and Cyst

Your doctor can diagnose these skin growths by simply examining and touching them. However, if they suspect cancer or an infection, they may order the following tests.

Biopsy

A small amount of tissues is removed from the growth and studied under a microscope to determine if they have abnormal cells.

X-ray and other imaging tests such as CT scan, MRI, and ultrasound scan.

These tests help your doctor detect abnormal growth and unusual contents in the lump.

How is Lipoma/Mole/Cyst Removed?

Surgical removal

A surgeon cuts the skin growths and removes them. However, they may reappear after surgery. Moreover, surgery can cause scarring and increase the risk of infections.

Liposuction for lipoma

Liposuction drains fatty content of the lump through a small hole.

Laser coupled with surgery to remove the contents of the cyst.

You may need to take an antibiotic after the surgery to prevent infection.
