Muscle Reconstruction- Orthopedics

Muscle reconstruction is a broad category of plastic surgery that falls under reconstructive surgery. Any part of the body that has muscle tissue can undergo muscle construction from head to toe.

Muscle reconstruction involves using muscle tissue from one part of the body to repair and restore function of another area that has been damaged or subjected to disease, such as cancer. In many cases, muscle reconstruction occurs alongside cosmetic surgery and can sometimes substitute as cosmetic surgery too.

An example of a standard muscle reconstruction procedure would be a regional flap. Muscle tissue is taken from one area nearby an open flesh wound to help seal the flesh wound and maintain healthy blood flow.

Other muscle reconstruction surgeries and techniques include:
  • Abdominal Muscle Repair
  • Free Flap Surgery (Microsurgery)
  • Local Flap Surgery
  • Skin Grafts
  • Tissue Expansion
  • TRAM Flap Surgery

The recovery period after muscle reconstruction depends on the type of surgery and the degree of reconstruction.

In some cases, minimal surgery can be done on an outpatient basis with a recovery time of 2 weeks before being back at work. In more complicated cases such as abdominal muscle reconstruction, a patient may need to stay in a hospital for a few weeks. Painkillers may be prescribed during the post-operative recovery period.

Consult with a plastic surgeon before deciding on a muscle reconstruction, as they will be able to advise you on the best course of action to take.
