Pigmentation Treatment- Dermatology

Skin pigmentation needs concealing, because it can alter your original skin color. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin.  Various cells in the skin make melanin.

Depending on the reason behind your hyperpigmentation, treatments may include makeup or concealers, skin treatments or even stopping a medication. There are a lot of therapeutic choices if home remedies for pigmentation will not give you the results you need. These include:

Chemical strips

Chemical strips are remedial treatments that can be done on the face, the hands, and the neck. They're used to improve the appearance or feel of the skin.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure used to repair skin tone and surface. It can improve the effects of sun damage, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, age spots, skin breakouts, scarring, melasma, and other skin-related conditions.

Intense pulsed light (IPL)

IPL means intense pulsed light. It's a type of light treatment that is used to treat wrinkles, spots, and excess hair.

Laser re-emerging

Laser skin re-emerging is a form of skin treatment that is performed by a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. It uses lasers to help improve skin surface and appearance.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy, which means"cold treatment," is a treatment where the skin is exposed to cold temperatures for a few minutes.

Why Is Pigmentation Treatment Required?

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that makes your skin dark. This can show as patches in your skin or even your entire body. Age spots, also called liver spots, are common forms of hyperpigmentation.

Which Doctor to Consult?

A dermatologist can treat hyperpigmentation.

What to expect during the procedure?

Treatment will take 15-30 minutes depending on the area being managed.

The doctor will first obtain a medical history and will perform a physical exam to know the cause. A skin biopsy may also be done if needed. The duration of treatment may depend on a person’s medical condition and the extent of the condition.  Most procedure can bring about little pain. There are some areas of the body that are more sensitive than the others and can experience some discomfort after treatment.

Post-operative care

Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 can help, as can wearing tops or clothes that protect from direct sunlight.

Complications

Sun exposure can boost melanin formation and can thus lead to the reoccurence of hyperpigmentation.
