Obesity is a serious disease and can also be fatal. It is root cause of multiple diseases like cardiovascular risks and diabetes. However, modern medicine is coming up with a solution to everything. Bariatric surgery is a weight loss technique, which is very effective in combating obesity, recovering from diabetes as well as reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
There is no one-way to perform this surgery. There are at least 4 alternatives and the doctors can explain to you which one will work best for you.
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass- in this procedure, a small pouch is created on the top of your stomach and is connected by cutting the small intestine and attaching to the pouch. Since this will be small is size, it can only hold a small amount of food and will keep you feeling full. Also, the food is exposed to a small portion of the small intestine, which means less absorption of nutrients and calories.
- Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding- in this procedure, the upper part of the stomach is tied with a band containing an inflatable balloon. This can be inflated and deflated and controls the amount of food the stomach can hold.
- Sleeve gastrectomy- in this procedure, part of your stomach is extracted. When you have a smaller stomach, you will feel full on a small quantity of food.
- Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch- much like the sleeve gastrectomy, a portion of the stomach is removed. But in this procedure, the last part of the small intestine is attached to the first of the intestine (called duodenum). This ensures the flow of bile and digestive juices but reduces the expose of food to intestines reducing the absorption of nutrients and calories.
