General medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases concerning adults only. Just like a pediatric is specialized in children care. Sometimes this is also called internal medicine and the practitioners of this field are called internist. This field is broken down into subdivisions and sub-specialties that trains physicians to specialize in particular diseases.
Some sub-specialties are:
- Allergy, asthma and immunology
- Critical care medicine
- Medical oncology
- Sleep medicine
- Sport medicine
Some of the diseases that are dealt with are quite complex. General medicine practitioners work in a variety of settings. Some may be family physicians and may provide home care for patients while others may work at a hospital. Many general physicians are found working in care centers as well as rehabilitation centers.
Some of the tests that a general physician may perform include blood tests, measuring blood pressure, blood sugar level test, electrocardiogram (ECG), urinalysis and fecal occult blood test. General medicine also includes the use of diagnostic imaging like ultrasounds, CT scans an MRI.
To analyze a patient or diagnose the problem, a general physician will need to know your medical history, which includes any surgeries in the past, allergies, medical problems or any diseases that run in the family. He/she will also ask you to describe the characteristic of your present illness and can also diagnose your problem simply by examining your nails, skin, mouth and other external exams. Once a general physician figures out the cause of the problem, he/she will prescribe the appropriate test to know the problem and the root cause.
