Plastic Surgery Consultation- Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

Types of plastic surgery:

Various types of plastic surgeries include facelift, brow/forehead lift, eyelid lift, nasal surgery, nose reshaping, chin, cheek, or jaw reshaping / facial implants, lip augmentation, breast augmentation, breast reconstruction, tummy tuck, liposuction, chemical peel, dermabrasion / dermaplaning, collagen/fat injectable fillers etc. Plastic surgeons are the medical specialists who generally perform the different plastic surgeries.

What to expect during the surgery?

Different surgical techniques are used in plastic surgery such as flap surgery, laser surgery, skin graft, and tissue expansion.

Flap surgery: This procedure involves transferring healthy tissue from one part of the body to another. Depending upon the location of the flap and the structures (such as lost skin, fat, muscle movement etc.,) that need to be repaired, different types of techniques may be used. In local flap surgery, the flap is next to the wound. The skin remains attached at one end and thus blood supply is left intact. Regional flap requires a part of tissue that is attached to a specific blood vessel. Bone/soft tissue flap is used when bone and the overlying skin are transferred to another location. Muscle and skin flap is used during reconstruction of breast after mastectomy. In microvascular free flap, skin and blood vessels are detached from one site of the body and reattached to another site.

Laser surgery: This surgery leads to minimal bruising, bleeding, and scarring. Depending on the location of the surgery, type of laser is selected.

Skin graft: A skin graft is used to cover damaged or missing skin. During this procedure, in order to restore the normal appearance and/or function, healthy portion of skin is removed from one part of the body to another part of the body.

Tissue expansion: This surgery involves inserting a balloon-like device (known as an expander) underneath the skin. Once inserted, the expander slowly secretes fluid into the area that has to be repaired to actually expand and stretch the skin. This also helps to grow extra skin to repair nearby lost or damaged skin.

What to expect after the plastic surgery?

Patient would have bruising and swelling at and near the area where surgery was performed. Patient may also feel tingling and numbness. It is recommended to keep the incision clean.
