What is spiral suit?

Spiral suit, also known as the spiral movement correction suit, is a significant part of the Kozyavkin Method used to treat movement disorders. A neurologist i.e. a doctor who has specialized in brain and movement disorders will propose the course of actions along with a physical therapist for patients who require a spiral suit

Who requires spiral suit?

Spiral suit is used in patients with cerebral palsy for the correction of movement. It is used to improve corrective treadmill training, gymnastic exercises, training with play therapy devices, mechanotherapy, and plain movement activity of the child.

Spiral muscle groups play following important roles:

  • Support the spine
  • Protect the head position during movements
  • Support physiological spinal curves
  • Participate in the movement of the thorax during respiration

Spiral muscle groups are important for compound movements. These movements require synchronized position and movement of the trunk and extremities. Spiral muscle groups basically cross the body from one side to another side as well as join the left and right side and the upper and lower part of the body. Spiral muscles guarantee bilateral balance and appropriate posture of the body under gravity. They also provide coordination during walking, running, and jumping. Thus, they provide a stable position of the body and extremities.

How does spiral suit correct movement?

Spiral suit has multiple elastics straps which are wrapped in a spiral across the body and extremities. These elastic straps are attached to the supportive elements on the trunk and extremities (such as elbow, foot, vest, shorts, knee, and wrist pieces). This way the elastic straps imitate the positions of the main muscle groups and provide the essential corrective force.  These straps also have Velcro attachments on them and thus it is possible to make different adjustments to obtain desired corrective action.

Elastic strap system involves an axial spiral, main extremity spirals and supplemental correction straps. The Axial Spiral, the central component of the suit, helps to correct the position and movement of the trunk, shoulder and pelvis girdle. Depending on the movement abnormality, various types of the axial spirals are used such as main axial spiral, combined axial spiral, anterior axial spiral, and two-tiered axial spiral.

Depending on the upper extremity deformation and preferred influence, the alignment of the main hand spirals is decided. There are three main types of hand spirals such as external rotation, internal rotation, and external shoulder - internal forearm rotation.

Depending on the lower extremity deformation and preferred influence, the alignment of the main leg spirals is decided. There are four main types of leg spirals such as external rotation, internal rotation, internal hip – external shank rotation, and external hip – internal shank rotation.

Appropriate external force applied by the suit along with the repetition of the exercises would be helpful to gain a steady formation of the new movement patterns.
