Cardiology
If we break down the term Cardiology, it is made up of two words ‘cardio’ in Greek means heart and ‘logy’ means study. It is not limited to just one organ but the entire circulatory system.
The practitioner of this field is called a cardiologist. The field is broken down in two; adult cardiology and pediatric cardiology.
In this field of medicine, a number and variety of diseases are dealt with. Some of these are:
- Congenital heart defects
- Coronary artery diseases
- Heart failure
- Valvular heart diseases
- Electrophysiology
- Abnormal heart rhythms
- Vascular diseases
There are multiple factors that can cause heart diseases. For example, stress, by-birth heart defects, smoking, diabetes, excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine and drug abuse can all lead to heart diseases. Family medical history is also an active factor. Preventative measures include not completing omitting but controlling some of the factors to reduce your risks of heart diseases.
Common symptoms of heart diseases may vary for men and women. In males, chest pains can be a red flag but on the other hand, women may feel chest pain along with shortness of breath and fatigue.
Other common symptoms include:
- Chest tightness
- Chest pressure
- Pain in the jaw, back, throat or neck.
- Fluctuation in heart rhythm- heart could be beating very fast or go the other way
- Lightheadedness
- Fainting
- Unusual skin rashes
- Swelling
In order to reduce the risk of heart diseases, it is recommended to maintain good hygiene, be physically active (some form of exercise in your lifestyle) and eat healthier. You do not necessarily need to take a no-meat, no-oil, no-carbs diet. Just control your portions and work out a little. With a little motivation, none of it is hard.
