Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the field, which is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of eyes and vision. The practitioner of this field is called an ophthalmologist. This field is said to be dated back to 800 BCE and originates in Ancient India.

There is an increasing need of eye care due to our excessive exposure and dependence on screens and poor habits. We spend all day on laptops, smartphones and tablets, adults and children alike. These days there is a rapid increase in the number of children with poor eyesight and thus, the need for more ophthalmologists.

This field also involves surgical procedures, often called microsurgery and prescriptions such as contact lenses or glasses. They are equipped with skills that deal with the full spectrum of eye care and related diseases. There are many sub-specialties under the field of ophthalmology and chances are that one physician may be specialized in one or more specialties. Not all specialists can perform complex microsurgeries or laser therapy.

Some of the sub-specialties include:

  • Ocular oncology (eye cancer)
  • Glaucoma
  • Pediatric ophthalmology
  • Refractive surgery
  • Medical retina- this specialty deals with disorders and treatments of the retina
  • Cornea- all disorder and treatments related to the cornea
  • Oculoplastic and orbit surgery

The field of ophthalmology is seeing a lot of modernizing and advancements in respect to techniques as well as equipment. Due to this and the fact that a lot of very complicated surgeries come under ophthalmology, a specialist has to go through years of training before he can perform solo procedures.
