Orthopedics

Orthopedics is the field of medicine that is concerned with the skeletal system and all associated muscles, joints and ligaments. It deals with functional problems, correction of deformities that may be present by birth or any repairs made to the bones after sustaining injuries.

The very first studies in orthopedics was recorded back in the 1850s. However, the origin of orthopedics dates back to the Middle Ages when warfare was common and soldiers and warriors suffered injuries in battles. Of course today the remedies have been replaced by complex surgeries and modern equipment.

A practitioner of this field is called an orthopedic surgeon and he may deal with other diseases and disorders like:

  • Tumors
  • Spinal injuries
  • Sports injuries/ other injuries sustained in accidents
  • Musculoskeletal trauma
  • Degenerative diseases
  • Other infections

The field of orthopedics is very competitive. The selection process for specialization is tough and not enough. After an orthopedic surgeon specializes I orthopedics, he will further go on to specialize in a sub-specialty. Some of the sub-specialties are:

  • Shoulder and elbow surgery
  • Pediatric orthopedics
  • Skull reconstruction
  • Spinal surgeries
  • Trauma
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Musculoskeletal oncology

Not all of these specialties fall specifically under orthopedics. Hand and spinal surgeries deal with nerves and reconstruction, which is why some of these sub-specialties fall under neurosurgery as well as plastic surgery. Procedures performed under orthopedics are numerous. Some examples include hip replacements, repair of various fractures in the skull, ankle etc. and intervertebral disc surgery.

Orthopedic surgeons rely on a lot of X-rays for diagnosis and then to reach an appropriate course of treatment.
